I finally had the opportunity to see this amazing film Hidden Figures and couldn’t resist writing a post about it! The film starts in the late 60s when segregation and Jim Crow was in full motion. But to add more challenges and road blocks to the main theme of the movie, the heroines are 3 African American women…Read More The film stars Taraji P. Henson as Katherine G. Johnson, the African American mathematician who participated in calculating flight trajectories for Project Mercury and the 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the Moon. The film also features Octavia Spencer as Dorothy Vaughan and Janelle Monáe as Mary Jackson, as well as Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Glen Powell, and Mahershala Ali. All actresses and actors did phenomenal in my opinion but I have to say, Janelle M. stole the show. Her quick response, wit, and spunky line come backs were so on point. It’s rare we see a film that includes African American women in such light and focus towards internal strength, emotional stability and intellect. I for one needed to see this as a reminder of the amazing humans they are even though I have the best mother and sister. Also, this is an untold story and one that I would have never known about…call me ignorant but I honestly had no clue these important women lived these fierce lives and paved the way for others including men to have such progressive success in the world of mathematics and engineering. Next was the music. I may be a bit bias but Hans Zimmer is one of my biggest idols in the music world and Pharrell is one of the biggest inspirations to me – he bridges my two passions of music and fashion like no other artist. His production level in the film was right on the money and Hans’ scoring efforts along withBenjamin Wallfisch hit the mark for each important scene and on every influential dramatic exit shot. I highly recommend everyone check this film out…personally, we need more films that explore all of our background and historical achievements from all races, ethnicities, genders and creeds. Such roles play a pivotal port in equality in front of the camera, behind the desk and equal pay. When women are allowed to lead, support and control the visual and creative acting roles, it really helps everyone and gives a sense of hope that is somewhat of a challenge to express in a blog. Soooo, whenever you get a couple of hours to spare please go see hidden figures and also listen to the soundtrack. Now, as a bonus teehee I created a new production that I’m sharing with you all. Seeing and hearing Pharrell’s music get matched to the visuals inspired me to make a track literally right after I saw the movie. I took a snippet of inspiration from one of his older records “Love Bomb” from an N.E.R.D album and recreated a Socrates field production/arrangement. Go take a listen below and feel free to share :). Socrates Howard - Hidden Love (Instrumental Prod by Socrates Howard)
